How Should Safety Signs Be Positioned?

The most important principle when installing a safety sign is visibility from the intended viewing position.

A sign can be technically correct and still be ineffective if it is hidden behind equipment, mounted where people do not naturally look, obscured by a door, positioned around a corner without suitable directional information, or installed at a size that cannot be read from the required distance.

Before fixing a sign to a wall, door, column or other surface, consider the following.

Consider the line of sight

A person should be able to see the sign without having to deliberately search for it.

How High Should a Safety Sign Be Installed?

There is no single mounting height that applies to every type of safety sign. The appropriate position depends on the purpose of the sign, the environment, the viewing distance and the position from which people need to see and interpret the information.

For escape-route signs, however, BS 5499-4:2013 provides specific recommendations for mounting height.

Where an escape-route sign is positioned above a doorway or in an open space, BS 5499-4 recommends that it is mounted between 2.0 m and 2.5 m above floor level, measured to the base of the sign, and positioned as close as practicable to the centre line of the escape route. This helps ensure that the sign can be seen over the heads of people using the route.

Where an escape-route sign is mounted on a wall, the recommended mounting height is between 1.7 m and 2.0 m above floor level, measured to the base of the sign, keeping the sign within the immediate field of vision.

BS 5499-4 also recognises that mounting heights above 2.5 m may be appropriate in large open spaces or for operational reasons. In these circumstances, the sign needs to remain conspicuous and identifiable, and a larger sign may therefore be necessary.

Where practicable, signs should be installed at a consistent height throughout the escape route. Consistency helps occupants anticipate where they will find the next sign as they move through the building.

Is BS 5499 a Legal Requirement?
